In 2015, we met Whitney at HVAF of Indiana. He had just graduated from the Hoosier Veteran’s Assistance Foundation (HVAF) REST program.
“One night I did not make it to the mission in time and I had to sleep outside. I had no choice but to sleep on the street.”
He learned about HVAF’s Residential, Employment, Substance Abuse Treatment (REST) program. The program’s 12-step recovery curriculum became his last attempt to become clean and sober.
Whitney says you have to be ready to do some work and self-evaluation if you want to see change. “There’s no wand or nothing that’s going to be waved over you and things are going to be alright. You’ve got to do some work, you got to want it,” adds Whitney. “It is the first time I really accomplished something in my life that I’m really proud of.”
After successfully completing the REST program, Whitney joined Back on My Feet and was connected to a network of volunteers and others like him who learned to use running to build confidence and empowerment. Running literally got Whitney back on his feet and set on a new course for life.
His success story doesn’t stop there. In recent months, Whitney has been focused on his next goal – homeownership! Thanks to Greater Indy Habitat for Humanity, Whitney’s dream is set to come true this summer.
