When we met Mariam, she was 7 months pregnant and living in a tent in the woods with her children ages 10 and 2. She had lost her home due to domestic violence in the midst of COVID-19 in late March. One night as they were preparing food in the woods, the Department of Child Services arrived. Due to their homelessness, Mariam’s children were removed and placed in foster care. To describe the trauma this creates for moms and their children is impossible. Mariam was broken.
Immediately, the team at Family Promise of Hendricks County brought Mariam into their residential program. She was distraught and depressed with little hope. They quickly interceded with DCS and started advocating for her while clearing all the hurdles required to reunite this family.
Mariam started working a full-time job at a local warehouse. This was not easy for Mariam, who was very pregnant and worried about COVID. But Mariam was committed to proving her stability to DCS.
After a few weeks at Family Promise, they helped Mariam find a very affordable apartment at a complex that gives second chances to families. This also meant her children would be returned to her! It was a reunion of tears and joy for all of them!
Family Promise of Hendricks County continues to work to ensure that everyone has a home they can afford and the dignity they desperately seek. They have remained responsive to the growing needs created by COVID-19 and committed to creating a stronger more equitable community. They have ended homelessness for 35 families in the last four months and prevented homelessness for 195 families. Their goal is to keep everyone in their home and quickly rehouse those who are struggling.
We are proud to support Family Promise of Hendricks County and others like them who are dedicated to keeping Hoosiers housed and recovering quickly from homelessness. Learn more about how your donation can make a difference for someone like Mariam at www.realtorfoundation.org.
