The REALTOR® Foundation is celebrating a win with Helping Veterans and Families (HVAF) of Indiana. The 2022 Point-In-Time Count, required by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, is a count of sheltered and unsheltered people experiencing homelessness on a single night in January. This year’s count revealed a decrease of 35% in veterans experiencing homelessness in Marion County! “Fewer veterans and their families are forced to live on our city’s streets,” states HVAF CEO Emmy Hildebrand. “Fewer veterans and their families are experiencing the trauma and heartache that comes with homelessness. This is worth celebrating!” The fight against homelessness can often feel like an endless battle, but these numbers show us that the support, advocacy, and donations given to the Foundation are working! Because of the generosity of our donors, there are nearly 100 less veterans sleeping on Indiana streets on any given night.
But there is still work to be done. To sustain this incredible accomplishment, we must lend our support more than ever as government pandemic-related funding is sure to decrease as we near the abatement of COVID-19. Case loads are higher, the need is greater, and new populations are facing homelessness at staggering rates.
This is why HVAF offers emergency and transitional housing for veterans in our communities facing homelessness. Once housed, HVAF’s clients receive job support, transportation assistance, basic needs, and many more of the resources necessary to remain employed and live a healthy, stable life. They even have a food and clothing pantry, where Army Veterans like Dustin, at 63 years, can get wholesome food and business clothing for interviews. HVAF volunteers even gave him a haircut and shave- his first in 7 years! HVAF also provides financial literacy training for veterans like Brianca, who fell on hard times after serving in the Marine Corps. Now that she is housed and employed, she has the budgeting skills to make positive financial decisions to reach her goals!
